A perseverence story
Have you ever had a great dream that was going to change your life? You experienced the thrill of starting a project and taking the first baby steps. But then you were told it was too big, too risky or too difficult. You felt you didn’t have the time, or the qualifications or the support system. And you gave up.
Have you ever wondered how different your life would have been if you had completed that special project?
There was once a man named Colonel Sanders, who had a great project just like you. His great project was a fried chicken recipe. He went door to door from restaurant to restaurant. The first one hundred restaurants he tried rejected his idea outright. People made fun of his idea, his recipe and even his white shirt. How many rejections would you take, before you give up?
Colonel Sanders did not give up. He went on to try a thousand restaurants. A thousand doors were knocked upon. And a thousand doors banged shut in his face. How many doors would you knock, before you give up?
At the 1009th door, Colonel Sanders met with success. A restaurant finally accepted his offer. And from there, his business grew. Today, it is a chain, called Kentucky Fried Chicken. The outrageously successful KFC idea was faced with a “No” 1008 times, before a “Yes” finally arrived. How many times would you take a “No”, before you gave up?
If you had taken a thousand rejections, heard a thousand “No!”s, had a thousand failures and still kept going, where would your dream project be, by now?
Why is it that each time we get rejected, we decide we are not good enough to be selected? Why is it that each time an attempt fails, our confidence gets shaken? Why is it that each time a door closes on us we take it as a personal failure? Closed doors have nothing to do with failure. Take a pen and write this down, closed doors have nothing to do with failure. It is just one person’s opinion.
It doesn’t matter how many doors were closed. There are enough doors in the world for everybody. And it is guaranteed (fist hit palm) that a door will open for you eventually. The question is, are you ready to keep knocking?
You might have tried once and got rejected. You might have tried twice and got beaten. You might have tried a third time, and got burned. Will your fried chicken recipe, your big dream, be given up? Or will you keep knocking, until the 1009th door finally opens for you?
See if you think about it, every time a door smashes close on your face, you have just discovered one more way it is not going to work. And at some point, you are going to run out of ways that don’t work, and hit upon a path that does work. There are only so many possible permutations and combinations in this world. If you keep going, something’s just gotta give in the end.
It might take a thousand knocks, but at the end, it is well worth it. Do not give up. Do not take “No!” for an answer. Keep knocking!
